Fire burns clubhouse at Modesto golf course (Video)

A fire at the two-story Dryden Park Golf Course clubhouse late Tuesday night caused severe damage but largely spared the pro shop, authorities said.

Just after 11 p.m., firefighters with the Modesto, Ceres and Stanislaus Consolidated fire departments responded to the course at 920 Sunset Ave. in west Modesto on a report of a working structure fire.

Upon arrival, crews found fire on the west side, the parking-lot side, of the building, Modesto Battalion Chief Darin Jesberg said. The initial attack was from the interior, but as the fire grew, crews pulled out and fought the flames from the outside to contain the spread.

The clubhouse bottom is mostly brick, and the building is otherwise heavy timber, so it took a while to knock down the fire, Jesberg said. The dining, vending and kitchen area suffered most of the fire damage, he said, while the pro shop appears to have had just minor smoke and water damage. The attic also suffered fire damage.

The Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit is investigating cause and origin of the blaze.

The fire likely was called in by an area resident, Jesberg, and there were no reports of anyone being seen in the area, which has a significant issue with vagrants.

No damage estimate was immediately available, and Jesberg said representatives of the city, which owns Dryden, were quickly on the scene.
