By the time Asterisk Talley reached the 18th hole at Augusta National on Saturday, her story had already been written and the tears were starting to well in her eyes.

Asterisk Talley fell victim to Augusta National’s 12th hole during the final round of the ANWA.

Bryson DeChambeau was among those to offer words of encouragement and support to Asterisk Talley after she endured a devastating collapse during the final round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur.

The 17-year-old phenom was primed for the biggest victory of her career on Saturday.

She held a one-shot lead after 36 holes and, by the time she had reached the turn, had stretched her advantage to three.

But Talley dropped a shot at the 11th and carded a brutal quadruple-bogey seven on the iconic par-three 12th to slip five behind.

Talley’s tee shot landed in the bushes but bounced back into the bunker. She found the water twice from the same spot and, after draining a long putt for a seven, joined a long list of players who have fallen victim to “Golden Bell”.

Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau, Francesco Molinari and Jordan Spieth are among the notables who have torpedoed their chances for victory on the same hole.

When Tiger Woods won the 2019 Masters, Finau and Molinari both found the water whilst playing in the final group.

Spieth surrendered a five-shot lead during the final round of the 2016 Masters after finding the water twice at the 12th.

Woods also recorded a 10 on the 12th during the final round of the 2020 Masters by finding the water three times.

Colombia’s Maria Jose Marin, 19, carded a final-round 68 to win the 2026 ANWA by four strokes.

Speaking to reporters after her round, Talley said: “I’m just a little emotional, not only because I didn’t get it done today, but also just everyone is so supportive.”

Talley said she was particularly upset because she couldn’t get the win in front of her family and friends.

“It’s hard when they have to watch that and see you not do well or not accomplish what you wanted,” she added.

“They just told me that they love me [and] it didn’t define me as a player that that happened out there.

“It’s hard not to get emotional. There’s so much support out here. Sorry.

“I think it’s harder when there’s support out here watching you do that, but it’s great they’re still with me right now.

“I’m really happy that they’re here.”

As Talley left the course, Bryson DeChambeau gave her a hug and offered words of encouragement.

“He said keep my head high,” Talley said of DeChambeau. “He said he’s been in my position before, and he knows how it feels, especially here. He said you’re a great player. It doesn’t really matter.”

Bryson also told reporters: “The way it turned out, it’s not going to define her. It’s a moment for her to really learn.

“Obviously, I’ve had difficult moments in my career, and if there’s anything I can do to support her, that’s what I’m here for.

“That’s why I’m here to support. Obviously, ANWA is a huge event now. It’s really transforming the game, and that’s what really matters here today.”
