College golfer shoots course record at US Open qualifier before DQing himself
‘I felt sick to my stomach’ – College golfer shoots course record at US Open qualifier before DQing himself.
Tommy Kuhl, who’s currently a fifth-year senior at the University of Illinois, recently shot 62 at a U.S. Open qualifier. The incredible round broke the course record.
Unfortunately, Kuhl was forced to disqualify himself after the round.
Once his 62 was in the books at Illini Country Club in Springfield, he went out to watch one of his teammates, Adrien Dumont De Chassar, compete in a playoff to get the final qualifier spot.
Kuhl told mondayq.com that was when he heard another teammate talk about the aerated greens, which reminded Kuhl that he’d broken a rule by repairing multiple aeration marks.
“I felt sick to my stomach,” he said. “I knew I wouldn’t be able to sleep if I didn’t tell the rules official.”

And then he DQ’d himself

As “Monday Q Info” shared, Rule 13 states:
You are allowed to fix “damage on the putting green” but that does not include “Normal practices for maintaining the overall condition of the putting green (such as aeration holes and grooves from vertical mowing).”
“I should know better,” Kuhl told mondayq.com. “It comes down to me. I should know that rule.”
Kuhl is a talented golfer and did the right thing by reporting his rules infraction. Let’s hope he gets another chance to qualify for a U.S. Open in the future.

This fine young man should run for public office, he has something many in our world lack nowadays… integrity. All the best best to you young man.
My question would be: Why are you playing such a prestigious event on aerated greens?
