How to perfect your putting with this brilliant drill

Your putting stroke needs to be consistent and in order to perfect it, you need to be able to synchronize key parts of your body.

A putting stroke can be different from player to player, but the ultimate aim is to be able to use your body to move the club in a stable and controlled fashion.

The team over at GolfMagic went to visit Lloyd Davies, the head professional at Heyrose Golf Club in Knutsford, who shared a great putting drill that he has used with various players he has taught.

In your putting stroke, you should avoid any unwanted movement in your wrists and focus on using your arms and upper body to make a solid putting stroke.

To do this, stick some blue tac on to the back of your putter and take your stance. You then grab an alignment stick and put this into the blue tac and stand the stick up against your body.

As Lloyd is showing in the images above, the stick is leaning against his body to keep it in line. So as you take your stroke, you should focus on keeping the stick aligned with the shaft of the putter.

This drill ensures that your arms, lower body and torso are all synchronized and you will avoid unwanted wrist movement with the stability that this drill brings.

As you can see in the next pictures above, Lloyd demonstrates what will happen if you use your wrists too much. The stick will sway well offline with the shaft and this documents a lack of control in your putting stroke. This drill is all about maintaining symmetry between your torso and your arms.

Lloyd has been coaching now for over 15 years in Sussex and Surrey and has recently returned from Dubai, having coached at Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills Golf Club for four years. He can be found on Instagram @lloydsgolfperformance.

He has worked with European Tour players and enjoys coaching golfers of all abilities. This putting drill is an example of how your putting stroke can dramatically improve.

Coach Hardin, Geno Wayne (yes that Wayne hardin)

Great tip and effective drill for adults. “I teach 7-17 year Olds and currently in 6th year as Head Coach Boys and Girls Division 3A Prep Sutherlin HS Oregon.” So being as I get all sizes, shapes, and stances, I improvise this drill with a flat mallet head putter and a shot glass of florescent water base paint. The heavier mallet head and half oval shape creates an automatic tendency to allow wrists to follow weighted “Roll of Putter Head” either open/closed on back-stroke, inside/outside path through contact…= a lot of misses high side from toe stroke, or low side from heal stroke. “Using the shot glas helps 2-Key areas critical to consistently starting roll on target line: A head is focused and down on that glass from start to finish of stroke. We want the head to move with stroke “Through The Hole” B: Elephant trunk is felt as “One Piece Takeaway” because we’re so deliberate now in keeping stroke on intended line, that we “Feel The Weight Of The Putter As Our Friend Lending Solid Strength Through Impact without our needing to force distance!” Bottom Line, my son who’s a Junior and actually top player All Divisions, 3rd Ranked All State (Freshman) cut 17 strokes off his scoring average in 1 year sticking to these drills. He was a 10HCP Freshman year, and now plays to a 2 competing with local club pros.
