If Golf Were Like Politics

I don’t know about you but all of this political talk has got me wishing it was just golf.  All golf, all golf talk, all the time.  No surprise that Presidents, Royals, and Dignitaries have made their way to our beautiful Southern California region to visit and play golf among some of the most prestigious courses in the country.  Just last month President Obama left the invitation-only and ultra-exclusive confines of Sunnylands and Porcupine Creek in Rancho Mirage of the Coachella Valley to play a round at the TPC Stadium Course at PGA West.

Taking that as my cue, if I were to get my wish and replace all of the 2016 Presidential candidates with professional golfers, here’s what it would look like…

If Golf Were Like Politics

John Daly.
Yes, he would be the one leaving us all scratching our heads wondering if his candidacy was legit or just his idea of a fun way to stir the pot, add some ruckus, turn up the volume, and change the dress code, but yet still manage to lead the polls because there are definitely people out there who like what he’s done and is doing.  Not only has ol’ Long John’s hair been a hot topic of the golf community (much like one candidate we all know so well), his not-so-mainstream role in golf would make him a candidate to take us into a new era.  He’s held records, won tournaments, helped design golf courses, released two music albums, and launched his aptly named Loudmouth clothing line.  You can’t deny that he’s a successful business man.

Paige Spiranac.
Ladies rejoice in having another go at President for the 2016 term.  Or do they?  With over 700,000 followers on social media she would most definitely be on the ballot.  She stands for women, she stands for golf, but she doesn’t stand for lady pantsuits like the lone lady on the real campaign trail.  Everyone in the golf community is talking about Paige but if you were to break down her followers most would be surprised to learn that it’s most likely heavily dominated by men.  Although she stands for women her message might be getting a tad bit mixed up, to no fault of hers.  At any rate, she has a presence, a platform, and power and she’s not afraid to use it.

If Golf Were Like Politics

Jason Dufner.  Well known for his expressionless and slumped over “Dufnering” look, the Duf would be SNL’s dream candidate to mock and there always has to be that one candidate.  We can’t forget about his run so far as a professional golfer with over seven wins (four of which were on the PGA Tour) which gets him qualified to run.  People like him and can see that he has a good golf game so it’s hard to overlook him.  Can’t you picture yourself enjoying a beer with him?  Jason Dufner was a walk-on in college so he’s proven he’s here to work, plus he has a degree in economics which only helps his campaign.

Tom Watson.  In the 70’s and 80’s Tom Watson was at the top of the world rankings of golfers.  He may be the oldest one up for the job this term but everyone just seems to love his ability to lead as shown during his Team USA Ryder Cup captain role.  Tom’s resume of wins is long and no doubt would he pick up votes from the millennial crowd because of his generosity and all around persona.  He’s a father to the game of golf and I’m sure folks would line up to put a sign with his name on it in their front yard.

If Golf Were Like Politics

Sergio Garcia.  Young, tactful on the golf course, charming personality, and accent help drive Sergio in the polls but he’s also not afraid to say what’s on his mind whether politically correct or not.  He’s had some backlash in the media for some not-so-choice words but people still love him.  Sergio would carry that Kennedy young handsome look all the way to the White House and he would represent the American Dream of coming from another country and being successful on our soil.  Even at the young age of 36, his impressive career on the PGA Tour and European Tour gives him the right to be up for your vote.  Although having never taken home a win at a major championship he has been darn close and it’s only a matter of time… plus, not all of our Presidents have been top of their class before taking office.

…oh wait, I heard that Travis Mathew is actually running for President.  He even has a slick campaign website – http://www.travismathew.com/travismathew-for-president!

I think I’ll just go vote for him!
