Jack Nicklaus also ranks the Masters last of all majors…but not for the same reason as Gary Player

Earlier this week, in an interview with Sportsmail, Gary Player ranked the Masters last when giving his list for the best major championships.

“But never mind the Masters, the Open is by far the greatest tournament on the planet.”

“I rate the Open at one, the US Open two, PGA three and Augusta four,’ he said. Four marvelous tournaments.”

When asked why he ranked the Masters after the other three, Player said it was because the others have been around longer.

“It’s the youngest of the majors. The others are steeped in tradition and history, and they still have to catch up. Nothing comes to the top without time.”

His comments were met with a lot of dissent on social media, but as it turns out, none other than Jack Nicklaus also had The Masters last on his list of majors.

In the Golf Channel documentary “Jack”, as Golf Channel points out, Nicklaus shared his opinion on the matter.

“I have the U.S. Open as the No. 1 tournament.”

“For the rest of the world, the British Open is probably the No. 1 tournament.”

“The Masters falls fourth because it’s not meant to be ahead of those others,” the six-time champion said.

“The Masters Tournament is not a championship. You can’t rank a tournament ahead of championships.”

While Nicklaus didn’t rank it ahead of the other majors, he was sure to emphasize how important winning the Masters was to him.

“You know I made my whole [professional] life toward winning the Masters and winning the first major championship [each year],” he said.

“Most people would put the Masters No. 1 and that’s OK. I’d put the Masters No. 1 as far to play in and enjoy doing that kind of stuff. But as far as importance of the game, and being American, the U.S. Open is No. 1.”

Gary Player is from a South Africa. A different view of golf and it’s history. I have no problem ranking by historical significance. Just because US golfers didn’t play The Open much before Palmer and Nicklaus, doesn’t diminish it to the rest of planet earth.
