Brooks Koepka was playing the first hole when he was nearly struck in the face by Jordan Spieth’s golf ball on day one of the Northern Trust, the first event of the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoffs.

According to Golf Digest’s Alex Myers who was following the action on the fairways as it happened at Liberty National, the near-miss happened when Koepka was playing the 1st hole while Spieth was playing the 18th.

Golf Digest contributor Christopher Powers tweeted: “Jordan Spieth almost just killed Brooks Koepka with his tee shot on 18 (Brooks was way left on 1). Safe to assume Jordy is on team Bryson.”

Myers also posted on social media how he himself was nearly struck by a golf ball while watching Spieth on the par-5 6th hole, as Cameron Smith’s ball from the 8th hole whistled past his ear.

Smith went on to shoot a round of 2-under 69, one better than Koepka (70) and three better than Spieth (72).

Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas shot lights out on Thursday with spectacular rounds of 8-under 63 to set the early pace and one shot shy of the course record.
