LIV Golf lose another top executive before 2023 campaign

LIV Golf has reportedly lost another top executive as they gear up for their 2023 campaign, which kicks off in February at Mayakoba.

Per GolfDigest, Jonathan Grella has left his position with the breakaway tour.

Grella joined the circuit last June before LIV’s inaugural $25m event at Centurion Club just outside of London.

He held the position of chief communications officer and was reportedly hired – according to the publication – to help with the circuit’s lobbying efforts.

Those lobbying attempts were dented when Greg Norman – who has just been promoted – appeared before congress to make the case for the circuit.

But he was left with egg on his face at Capitol Hill.

Republican Chip Roy told Norman:

“Don’t come in here and act like you’re doing some great thing while you’re pimping a billion dollars of Saudi Arabian money and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in the United States.”

Grella reportedly had a background in crisis management and public-image consulting.

He has held a number of high profile positions, most notably when he served as the director of communications for NFL side Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three seasons.

His departure comes as LIV Golf gear up for their second season. The first event is being played over 24-27 February at Mayakoba.

It’s not clear if he resigned or relieved of his duties.

Once again they will have a team and individual competition.

LIV have not announced any new signees for their second campaign.

There were rumors Anthony Kim could make a sensational return to golf but a close friend has now quashed rumors the 37-year-old will be playing again.

The schedule has expanded to 14 events. LIV say that it’s a “truly global” circuit but eight of the 14 events are being held in the U.S.

As many as three events will be held at properties owned by Donald Trump.

Who else has left LIV Golf?

Former chief operating officer Atul Khosla left LIV Golf in December, reportedly after having a furious exchange with Golf Saudi ambassador Majed Al-Sorour.

Al-Sorour has also now reportedly stepped down which has given Norman “more power” with LIV.

In early January, it was reported that LIV also lost Matt Goodman, who served as the president of franchises.

LIV also had Sean Bratches as their chief commercial officer.

He signed with LIV in November 2021 but abruptly resigned in May after the comments Norman made about the murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Norman said “everybody makes mistakes” when attempting to answer questions about his death.
