Major champ says this is the moment Mike Weir lost the Presidents Cup for the Internationals
Once again, the United States team has dominated the International team in the Presidents Cup, winning 18.5-11.5. The United States is now 15-1-1 all-time against the Internationals.
Former major champion Rich Beem wrote that he believes International Captain, Mike Weir, made a crucial mistake with his pairings on Saturday.
“I think Mike Weir lost it on Saturday by not mixing up some of his pairings going into the afternoon foursomes. I think that was a mistake and I think he’ll reflect upon that, but they clearly had a game plan going into it.
“Putting Adam Scott out there for the fourth straight match on Saturday afternoon, at the age of 44, was the wrong decision. I mean he had to have been drained and even Scott said himself that night that he was tired.”
Beem added that he also believes Weir made a crucial mistake in his handling of Adam Scott in Sunday singles as well.
“Then you look at where Weir put him out in the singles – he was down in one of the bottom groups. I would have thought that a fresh Scott – had he not played on Saturday afternoon – might have been in the top three matches and I think that’s where you needed him.”
Instead, Weir chose to put Jason Day first out, who got walloped by Xander Schauffele.
The Internationals will go back to the drawing board to try to find a way to compete with the United States.
