LIV Golf’s Patrick Reed has been forced to withdraw from this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews on the DP World Tour after sustaining a back injury from a soft mattress in a French hotel last week, according to Irish Golfer.
Reed, an honorary lifetime DP World Tour member, would have been competing in his third European event in the space of four weeks having played in the BMW PGA Championship and last week’s Open de France.
The 2018 Masters champion finished a very respectable tied fifth at Wentworth but he would go on to miss the cut at Le Golf National.
Much of that was likely to do with the back injury he picked up while staying at a Versailles hotel during the Open de France.
“The mattress was just too soft for me,” Reed told Irish Golfer’s Bernie McGuire.
“I played well in the pro-am but the pain in my back was getting worse.
“It’s disappointing as I was looking forward to coming back to France after being there for the Ryder Cup.”
He added: “I first played the Dunhill Links back in 2011. It was my first European Tour event, so that’s another event I was looking forward to playing.”
Sandwiched in between the BMW PGA and Open de France, Reed finished tied 12th at LIV Golf Chicago but he was once again on the winning 4 Aces team for a fourth consecutive LIV Golf tournament.
Reed has amassed just shy of $6 million in earnings so far from five tournaments on LIV Golf.
But despite earning all that money, Reed has slipped out of the world’s top 50 for the first time since 2014.
And he will now fall even further back after pulling out of the Dunhill Links at the Home of Golf.
Rory McIlroy is a warm tournament favourite at St Andrews this week as he looks for redemption following his near miss at the 150th Open Championship in July. In total now Reed has withdrawn, there will be 11 current LIV Golf players in action.
Reed has since returned home to the United States and he will look to get himself back to full health in order to compete in LIV Golf’s next tournament in Bangkok in two weeks’ time.
The American had played in six straight weeks of competition prior to his withdrawal this week.
