Phil Mickelson requests release for LIV Golf Invitational event, registers for PGA and U.S. Open

Phil Mickelson might return to competition as early as next month. Mickelson’s agent, Steve Loy, released a statement on Monday saying Mickelson has registered to play in both the PGA Championship and U.S. Open.

Perhaps more newsworthy, though, is that Loy also said Mickelson requested a release from the PGA Tour to play in the first LIV Golf Invitational Series event, which is June 9-11 in London. Tour players had until Monday to request a release for an event on that date, and Sports Illustrated reported earlier on Monday that 15 of the top 100 players in the world put in waivers. (No names were unveiled.)

Registering for these events, however, does not mean Mickelson will definitely play in them. The first, the PGA Championship, is May 19-22. Mickelson is the defending champion.

“Phil currently has no concrete plans on when and where he will play,” Loy said in the release. “Any actions taken are in no way a reflection of a final decision made, but rather to keep all options open.”

Mickelson has not played a competitive round since the Saudi International during the first week of February. A few weeks later, he put out a statement on his social media channels, saying he would be “taking some time away” following controversial comments on the new, Saudi Arabia-funded golf league.

“Although it doesn’t look this way now given my recent comments, my actions throughout this process have always been with the best interest of golf, my peers, sponsors, and fans,” Mickelson wrote. “There is the problem of off record comments being shared out of context and without my consent, but the bigger issue is that I used words I sincerely regret that do not reflect my true feelings or intentions. It was reckless, I offended people, and I am deeply sorry for my choice of words. I’m beyond disappointed and will make every effort to self-reflect and learn from this.”

The comments Mickelson was referring to came in an excerpt for a biography by Alan Shipnuck, published Feb. 17 on firepitcollective.com. (Shipnuck has disputed Mickelson’s characterization of their conversation.)

The excerpt detailed Mickelson’s involvement with LIV Golf, the new company headed by Greg Norman that is backed by the Public Investment Fund of the Saudi Arabian government. Mickelson called his new partners “scary motherf———s,” and he also insisted that PGA Tour media rights should be redistributed more equitably to Tour members.

“I have made a lot of mistakes in my life and many have been shared with the public,” Mickelson wrote in his statement. “My intent was never to hurt anyone and I’m so sorry to the people I have negatively impacted. This has always been about supporting the players and the game and I appreciate all the people who have given me the benefit of the doubt.

“Despite my belief that some changes have already been made within the overall discourse, I know I need to be accountable. For the past 31 years I have lived a very public life and I have strived to live up to my own expectations, be the role model the fans deserve, and be someone that inspires others. I’ve worked to compete at the highest level, be available to media, represent my sponsors with integrity, engage with volunteers and sign every autograph for my incredible fans. I have experienced many successful and rewarding moments that I will always cherish, but I have often failed myself and others too. The past 10 years I have felt the pressure and stress slowly affecting me at a deeper level. I know I have not been my best and desperately need some time away to prioritize the ones I love most and work on being the man I want to be.”

Who really cares at this point don’t go building him up he is just another money hungry rich golfer that wants more

And, apparently, you are an angry, bitter man who makes judgement on people without having all of the necessary information you need to do so. It’s so easy that way, however, it’s not really the right way to do things. Enjoy your day…find joy and be kind!

The bigger problem here is Phil apologizing for speaking the truth. It is just wrong.

Someone makes a comment, then gets a reply that they’re making judgements without knowing the facts. Next one says Phil apologized for speaking the truth. You also don’t know the facts to say what’s the true or not. Phil made earlier comments about the players being left in the dark and Rory said the players board had discussions with the tour so Phil was wrong.

Phil spoke the truth, this is common knowledge based upon our govt findings. Look it up yourself.

I guess Phil was right when he made 1 million in a insider trading deal. Only person I’ve ever heard of who just had to pay it back and no jail time. How about someone working for Pepsi and telling the corporation I’m
going to work for Coca Cola at the same time.
He is a scum bag . Play on one tour or the other.

That’s a bit of communistic view is it not?
