Phil Mickelson’s note to Tiger Woods at ’19 Masters

With this year’s tournament postponed from its traditional April date to November, the 2019 Masters once again became the focus of golf fans everywhere on Sunday. CBS re-aired the final round from last year’s tournament, while the tournament’s Twitter account posted footage and photos from 2019 — some from behind-the-scenes — to commemorate the historic moment for Woods. And as one social media post revealed, it appears that Mickelson — who wrapped up his round well before Woods did that day at Augusta National Golf Club — found time to write a note on a napkin for Woods and send it to the Champions Locker Room before Mickelson’s longtime nemesis donned the green jacket for the fifth time in his career.

“Tiger, So impressive! What a great tournament you played! So very happy for you!” — Phil

Woods’ Masters victory last year, his first since 2005, marked the end of an eleven-year major title drought, with Woods’ most recent major victory at that point coming at the 2008 U.S. Open Championship at Torrey Pines. Mickelson, meanwhile, has won the Masters three times in his career, with his most recent major victory coming at The Open Championship in 2013.

As the sports world lays dormant after shutting down nearly every athletic event and league last month, Mickelson has created some buzz for sports fans to perk up to. While responding to a twitter user in late March, Mickelson hinted at a televised rematch pitting the Lefty against Woods, perhaps in the near future.

According to Robert Lusetich, the second iteration of Tiger Woods versus Phil Mickelson could take place as a pay-per-view event, but with a caveat requiring that each play with a partner. The rumored partners are none other than NFL greats Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

While there’s no confirmation of a match yet, it wouldn’t be the first time that the two golfers have squared off if the proposal becomes a reality. Mickelson and Woods participated in a one-on-one match at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas in late 2018, with the two winning side bets worth $800,000 that was eventually given to charity. Mickelson ultimately prevailed, winning $19 million in prize money.

Mickelson, who turns 50 in June, has won 44 PGA Tour events in his career on top of his five major victories. His most recent PGA Tour win came in March 2018 at the WGC-Mexico Championship.

Woods, 44, holds the record along with Sam Snead for the most PGA Tour wins in history (82), with his most recent win coming this past October in the Zozo Championship. Woods’ 15 major titles are the second-most ever, trailing only Jack Nicklaus (18).
