PGA Tour winner believes Jay Monahan’s days as commissioner are numbered after latest shock merger with Saudi Arabia.

Six-time PGA Tour winner and former United States Ryder Cup player Hunter Mahan has tweeted “the players are done with Jay Monahan” following his recent decision to partner with the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which bankrolls the LIV Golf League.

Monahan had spent the past 12 months bashing Saudi Arabia’s funding of the LIV Golf League, only to then change his mind last month and confirm the PGA Tour would be joining forces with the Saudi PIF led by its governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan.

The sudden shock merger between the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and the Saudi PIF has rocked the sport at large and has left all of the world’s best players on the PGA Tour scratching the surface.

Even World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is stumped as to what is really going on.

Ahead of the Scottish Open this week, a co-sanctioned event between the DP World Tour and PGA Tour, Scheffler said:

“As a player on tour, we still don’t really have a lot of clarity as to what’s going on and that’s a bit worrisome. They keep saying it’s a player-run organisation, and we don’t really have the information that we need. I watched part of yesterday and didn’t learn anything. So I really don’t know what to say.”

It is understood by a large number of players that Monahan’s days as PGA Tour commissioner are numbered.

Six-time PGA Tour winner Mahan tweeted: “Players are done with him, except I’m not what the process is for removing him. Great time for players to find real representation.”

It is also understood that Greg Norman’s days as LIV Golf CEO could be numbered following this week’s latest Senate hearing with the PGA Tour.

Mahan’s comments come just after PGA Tour stars Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth both raised question marks over Monahan’s current role.

Like Spieth, Schauffele said his feelings towards Monahan have changed.

“We got a memo that he’ll be back on the 17th.

“If you want to call it one of the rockier times on tour, the guy was supposed to be there for us, wasn’t. Obviously he had some health issues.

“I’m glad that he said he’s feeling much better. But yeah, I’d say he has a lot of tough questions to answer in his return, and yeah, I don’t trust people easily.

“He had my trust and he has a lot less of it now. So I don’t stand alone when I say that.

“Yeah, he’ll just have to answer our questions when he comes back.”

Schauffele is the defending champion of this week’s Scottish Open.

He is playing his first two rounds alongside Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas.
