Rickie Fowler reveals his 4 keys to perfect bunker shots

If you’re looking for advice on how to improve your game from the sand, look no further than Rickie Fowler. The American star has ranked first and 12th in Sand Save percentage on the PGA Tour in 2017 and 2018, and on social media, Fowler took to his Instagram account to help share some handy tips.

So, what are Rickie’s keys from the sand? There are a few… Check them out below and watch the video.

1. Feet More Square to Target

Lots of players like to set their feet open to the target line on bunker shots, but not Rickie. He says doing that forces him to “chop” down on the ball too much and catch it heavy, so Fowler actually works on trying to shallow his path with a more square setup.

2. Forward Ball Position

Pretty straightforward. Ball position farther up to prevent digging, which would tend to happen if it was farther back.

3. Keep the Clubface Open

Rickie says he works on “rolling” the clubface open on the backswing and then “holds” it open on the way through. His feeling is that the right knuckles stay facing toward the ground on the way through the shot, and that the clubface ends the swing pointing to the sky.

4. Clubhead Passes Hands

As you follow through, the clubhead should release its hinge in a way that it outpaces the hands on the follow through, which Rickie says will help you “use the sole and bounce of the club.”

It’s that simple! And Rickie proved it by putting all four of those keys to work and lofting one over GOLF Top 100 Teacher Claude Harmon’s head on video. Check it out:
