Golf Rules Questions has answered another interesting rules situation on Instagram this week, this time involving a player striking a ball when up against a fence.
In the video below, a golfer is standing on one side of the fence, with his ball on the other side of it.
He then proceeds to hit his ball forward and onto the green. It’s a pretty remarkable shot given the situation as the ball rolled out to inside of 10 feet from the hole.
But is the stroke permissible?

Answer: Yes
GRQ says: “Provided at least part of the ball is on the course side of the posts (being on the course side of the netting is not the determination), then the player is permitted to make a stroke at a ball even when something is intervening to stop the club making direct contact with the ball.”
The rule in question here is Rule 10.1.
Rule 10.1 covers how to make a stroke and several acts that are prohibited in doing so. A stroke is made by fairly striking at a ball with the head of a club. The fundamental challenge is to direct and control the movement of the entire club by freely swinging the club without anchoring it.
