Scottie Scheffler’s first words after first missed cut in 78 consecutive events

Scottie Scheffler joked his Open preparations looked a little different than he originally planned after he missed his first cut in four years.

The world number one’s streak began in August 2022 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

Since then, the 30-year-old has dominated the men’s game, winning 16 events, including three majors, and stretched his lead over Rory McIlroy in the world rankings.

He had also made a remarkable 78 cuts in a row but the streak ended on Friday at the Genesis Scottish Open after the American backed up his opening two-under 68 with a 72 to finish on level par after 36 holes at The Renaissance Club.

With the afternoon wave yet to complete their rounds (at the time of writing this article), the projected cut stood at two-under.

It means Tiger Woods’ record of 142 consecutive cuts made is safe and unlikely to ever be beaten.

“I got off to a tough start and then on the back nine I didn’t feel like I was hitting it close enough to give myself enough opportunities,” Scheffler told Sky Sports.

“I think that’s what it really comes down to. I got off to a poor start and didn’t really hit it close enough to give myself a bunch of looks and that’s how you shoot over par.”

Scheffler was in contention after 18 holes but struggled badly on Friday.

He started on the back nine and made three bogeys, one birdie and five pars to make the turn in 37.

Scheffler looked as though he was heading in the right direction when he rolled in a 29-foot putt for birdie at the first.

But he followed it with seven consecutive pars before dropping another shot at the ninth.

Scheffler said having the unexpected weekend off was “a little different than I was planning”.

He added: “I’ll figure out how to get down from Birkdale and go from there.”

Scheffler said he was proud of his consistency but acknowledged the streak came with mixed feelings, noting that several of the PGA Tour’s signature events he played during that span did not feature cuts.

“But you know, I don’t think I finished outside of the top 20 or something like that many times this year,” he said.

“I’m definitely proud of the consistency, and wish I had a couple days over the weekend to make up some ground.

“But overall, get down to Birkdale a little earlier than expected and get used to a new course.”

Asked if he’ll return to play the Genesis Scottish Open next year, Scheffler said: “It’s funny, like last year, I feel like I got really frustrated on this golf course playing some good golf and just not really able to get anything going as well.

“You know, then I went and played well at The Open Championship.

“So it’s suiting me well over the years, but like I said, I haven’t played well here but I’ve played pretty well at The Open. So it’s always a balancing.

“It could be one of those things where you just get over jet-lag, get used to new style of golf, new types of grasses, and maybe I just haven’t adjusted as quick, or maybe this golf course just doesn’t suit my eye much.

“I’ll reflect on that kind of at the end of the year and assess what my plans are going into next season.”

The aforementioned Woods’ streak began at the Buick Invitational in February 1998 and ended at the Byron Nelson Championship in May 2005.

During that spell, he won eight major championships and even surpassed Byron Nelson’s previous record of 113 consecutive cuts made.

Scheffler is not the only big name whose impressive cut streak has come to an end in 2026.

Xander Schauffele’s streak of 72 consecutive cuts made came to an at the Farmers Insurance Open.
