Tour pro ripped to shreds by golf social media after shocking actions in Dubai
Matt Wallace has come under fire after footage showed him hurl his iron into the turf after an errant approach shot into the par-5 14th during the final round of the DP World Tour Championship on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. (video below)
Wallace, 34, missed the fairway on the par-5 14th and was forced to lay up.
The fiery Englishman was left with 177 yards to the pin.
After a little club twirl to suggest he liked it, Wallace’s ball came up short left in the greenside bunker.
Sky Sports Golf’s Dame Laura Davies initially said: “He’s completely misjudged that, yeah I don’t blame him…”
But then Davies quickly realised Wallace and his caddie Jamie Lane were both walking on without repairing the hefty chunk of turf that Wallace had just taken out of the pristine Earth Course.
“Well he should repair that, it’s not very nice to leave that.”
Sky Sports Golf’s Nick Dougherty was then heard saying: “Ohhhh Matt….”
Whether Wallace or Lane indeed went back to repair the significant damage to the fairway remains to be seen, but judging by the video they both walked ahead without giving it any attention.
Wallace, a five-time DP World Tour winner, went on to make a bogey-six on the 14th hole en route to closing with a 71.
He finished the week on 8-under par for the tournament in T11.
The video appeared to irk a large number of golf fans who were stunned by Wallace’s actions.
This is really bad, repair the damage FFS. Could cost someone the tournament and he would be raging if it happened to him. So much of the good will for how he’s improved his attitude undone and all he had to do was repair it.
Should be fined for ungentlemanly conduct. Imagine that in a Ryder Cup.
Shocking behavior not repairing that.
Fine him or DQ, that’s mad.
What’s the matter with him and Hatton?
Horrible behavior.
Imagine leaving a divot like that and not even replacing it, or his caddie, utter disgrace.
