U.S. Open final-round preview
Expectations were high for the USGA’s typically brutal setup heading into the week, and Winged Foot has delivered despite a rash of low scores on Thursday. In its first appearance since Gil Hanse’s 2016-17 restoration, the West Course at Winged Foot has been more than up to the task of many of the game’s best.
Those hoping for an over-par champion were disappointed after conditions eased off a bit Saturday afternoon, but if the 2006 U.S. Open taught us anything, it’s that scores can change significantly on Sunday, and in a hurry. And a Sunday charge by Bryson DeChambeau shooting -3 (the only under par score on Sunday) was just that.
Patrick Reed, Matthew Wolff, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas, the list goes on. Even Rory McIlroy wasn’t completely out of the mix if would have been able to make a late run. The stage was certainly set for a heart-pounding finish in Mamaroneck.
