WATCH: A runaway golf cart at the Travelers Championship nosedives into a lake

Some crazy things have happened on a golf course — wild animals on the loose, kids stealing golf carts, even an occasion fall in the water — but what just happened at the Travelers Championship is a first.

On the par-3 16th hole at TPC River Highlands, a group was trying to finish up on the green. All of a sudden, the announcers are startled by something going on in the crowd.

And then, it happened.

A runaway golf cart made quite a splash on Day 1 at the Travelers Championship. Literally.

We don’t know the details, but video of the rogue vehicle went viral on Thursday night. Perhaps, there will be some super serious investigation (Do golf carts have a “black box”?) as to what happened, but it really doesn’t matter, because it was quite a scene. And we can laugh about it now because no one got hurt. Although, one man came close!

The video captures a tournament volunteer make a move towards the unmanned cart as it headed toward the pond at the par-3 16th hole at TPC River Highlands. He had visions of being a hero—but then he (smartly) decided to get out of the way of the barrelling object.

Seriously, good call, dude. That thing would be tougher to slow down than Rory McIlroy right now.

Anyway, if you plan on attending the Travelers Championship on this summer Friday, make sure you hydrate and wear plenty of sunscreen. Oh, and keep your head on a swivel for runaway golf carts.
