No golfer on planet earth was hotter than Michael Kim on Friday. Kim opened his second round at the 3M Open in a tie for 43rd and finished it three clear at the top of the leaderboard. His did so on the back of a flaming-hot flatstick, draining putt after putt—at one point, he made nine straight one-putts—en route to a mythical 59.

The 2018 John Deere Classic champ began his round with back-to-back pars before spontaneously combusting. Kim went on to birdie 12 of his last 16 holes, including a stretch of five straight birdies on the front nine. Facing a 24-foot birdie putt on No. 18, Kim poured it in with authority, punctuating the once-in-a-lifetime round with a mighty fist pump. (video below)

By then, a crowd had gathered to watch Kim make history. His 59 was just the 15th such score in PGA Tour history, and set a new course record at TPC Twin Cities, surpassing the original mark of 60 set by several players including Adam Svensson and Kurt Kityama in 2025. Kim, who maintains a large following on X, posted a quick celebration following his round, promising one of his trademark breakdowns.

After Friday’s record-setting round, Kim also spoke to reporters about his incredible putting performance.

“Funny enough, some shots I didn’t feel like supremely confident over, but that’s kind of golf. I was kind of happy I got away with par on 13. But other parts of my game, like my putting felt fantastic. When you hit a putt and it does exactly what you kind of envisioned before you hit it, it’s an awesome feeling. Felt like that all day out there.”

“When I play tournament golf I’m most proud of the moments where it’s—you know, this is kind of you have to step up, you have to take the shots, you have to make the swings and really go for the shots you’re trying to hit and not kind of be too protective.

I made a really nice birdie putt on 16. It had a lot of break to it and it went in dead center. There’s a lot of water on 17 and 18 and I just kind of told myself like hey, this is the way—this is the moment to get into the history books and let’s go for it, let’s not try to luck our way into it, let’s try to step up and hit some really good shots. To be able to make some putts, and the putts that I made on 17 and 18 is what I get most from PGA TOUR golf, from golf in general, so really proud of that.”

Amazingly, Kim also revealed that he had considered not playing this week at all.

“Starting with the U.S. Open, I don’t think I’ve taken a week off. This is six in a row I want to say. It was just a lot of golf. But I want to make a run into the Playoffs and get to Memphis, get to BMW, get to Tour Championships. I felt decent energy-wise so I went home after I missed the cut at The Open, just spent a couple days relaxing and came up here and really happy I did.”
