How to Establish a Handicap Index

If you are new to tracking or using a Handicap Index I’d like to take a moment to show you the easy step-by-step process to get you started.

HOW TO ESTABLISH A HANDICAP INDEX

STEP 1 –  Now that you have your official GHIN number, start golfing!  In order to get a Handicap Index established you’ll need to play and record five 18-hole rounds or ten 9-hole rounds.

STEP 2 –  After your round of golf simply log into your profile and select “Post a Score” on the left hand side of your screen.  This will take you directly to the SCGA page to post a score.HOW TO ESTABLISH A HANDICAP INDEX

STEP 3 –  Enter your GHIN number and last name.  Hit continue.

STEP 4 – Select the date in which you played.  Keep in mind that if you forgot to post last week that’s absolutely fine.  The sooner you post the better but it’s never too late!

STEP 5 –  Since SOCAL Golfer is an eClub simply select the choice of Away for the type of round played.  Our members aren’t tied to one home course.

STEP 6 – Next select if it was 18 holes or 9 holes and leave the Rating/Slope Entry with the Course/Entry option.

STEP 7 – Then select which course you played by narrowing down the State and Starts With.  If you can’t find the course, let us know!

STEP 8 – Tees… which tees did you play from?  Red, white, gold, blue, black, etc.

STEP 9 – Enter that score and then choose if you played with other club members.  Hit post score and you’re good to go!

Now that you’ve entered your scores here’s when you can expect to get your first Handicap Index number.  It will take a minimum of five 18-hole rounds or ten 9-hole rounds to establish your first number.  The GHIN system does all of the calculations for you.  Your only job is to golf and post!

GHIN will send you what’s called a “revision update” email on the 1st and 15th of each month.  If you completed your first minimum rounds and posts of scores on the 10th you won’t get your official established index number until the 15th.

Keep golfing, posting, and watching as you can begin tracking the progress of your game!

Once you have your minimum number of rounds your Handicap Index will begin to move up or down.  You can look up your number at any time by clicking on the same “Post a Score” link from SOCALGolfer.org.

Whether you play two times a week or once every other month you’ll now be able to track your progress and officially compete in social, competitive, and charity tournaments as well as play an equitable round with friends any time you please.

If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!  You can post your questions here or reach out to your individual handicap chair.

We’re here to help!
