Q1: What is the oldest golf course in Southern California?
A1: Catalina Island Golf Course was built in 1895 and was designed by none other than Bobby Jones.
Q2: In what year was the SCGA founded?
A2: The SCGA was founded July 27, 1899 by joining five clubs in the region into one association. Today, only two of those courses remain – Los Angeles Country Club and Redlands Country Club.
Q3: What is the longest golf course in all of the region?
A3: Jack Kramer’s Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills, CA boasts a total distance of 7,587 yards on its South Course.
Q4: Torrey Pines was the last to host the U.S. Open in Southern California (2008). Who won that year?
A4: Tiger Woods took home the trophy shooting an overall tournament score of -1. He did have to compete in a playoff with Rocco Mediate but he managed to clinch a prize purse of $1.35 million!
Q5: Speaking of the U.S. Open, what was the first Southern California course to host the illustrious tournament?
A5: Ben Hogan was the victor at the first ever California-hosted location at the stunning Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA in 1948. The U.S. Open didn’t return to our region until 2008. We are set to return to the same stage of Torrey Pines come 2021.
Q6: Where did President Barack Obama play golf in February of this year? (Hint: If you were reading our blog you’d know this answer no prob!)
A6: The President ventured out of the ultra-exclusive and invitation-only confines of Sunnylands and Porcupine Creek in Rancho Mirage, CA to go play the TPC Stadium Course at PGA West.
Q7: How many municipal golf courses (of all lengths) are in the City of Los Angeles?
A7: There are 13 courses all with the municipal backing in LA.
Q8: If you were to take an all-expense paid golf trip around our region, approximately how many golf courses would you get to play?
A8: Our region has over 1,200 courses!
Q9: What golf course is considered by most the hardest in the region?
A9: Leave it to Pete Dye to rise to the challenge of making the toughest course in the region. The PGA West Stadium Course was designed to play mind games on the amateur to the pro and it’s hard to argue that it doesn’t.
Q10: Who ranks higher in collegiate golf – Southern California based college men or women?
A10: Currently the USC women’s golf team is ranked number one in the country! The men of USC are currently ranked 3rd.
