Jason Day’s bird-themed Masters outfit, designed by his apparel partner Malbon, gets rejected at the final hour by Augusta officials.

Day has been asked by Augusta National to amend his bird-themed outfit ahead of the 2026 Masters, continuing a recent trend of scrutiny over his on-course fashion.

The change, confirmed by Sports Illustrated’s Brian Giuffra just a week before the tournament, relates to a bold Malbon outfit Day had intended to wear during Thursday’s opening round.

The former world number one was set to debut a full bird-themed look, but as has proven the case in recent years, Augusta National officials requested a revision.

Day, 38, will still be able to slip on Malbon’s Birds of Georgia jacket, but instead of wearing bird pants will have to opt for solid-colored trousers.

Malbon had described the original concept as nature-inspired, suggesting that tuning into bird sounds and symbolism could help sharpen focus and “make more birdies.”

The brand even incorporated bird calls into Day’s preparation in the months leading up to golf’s first major at Augusta National.

This is not the first time Day’s attire has drawn attention at Augusta National.

After signing with Malbon in 2024, he was asked to remove a Malbon vest during the second round of that year’s Masters.

The vest featured large, bold block letters, ‘MALBON GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP’, and officials deemed it did not correctly align with the club’s strict clothing standards.

He complied, acknowledging the tournament’s traditions, and changed garment accordingly.

Since then, Augusta has taken a more proactive stance, requesting to review Day’s outfits in advance.

In an interview with GolfMagic, the 2015 US PGA champion and 13-time PGA Tour winner admitted ahead of the 2025 Masters that his clothing would require approval and hinted some of Malbon’s more adventurous designs might not pass.

Nothing has changed in 2026 either.

Day heads into this year’s Masters at giant odds of 70/1, with a strong course history that includes five top-10 finishes from 14 appearances.
