John Daly reveals why using a golf cart is a ‘big disadvantage’ on the course

John Daly, who’s already had his right knee replaced, revealed at the PNC Championship that he is scheduled to have his left knee replaced this Wednesday.

Speaking to PGATour.com, Daly discussed the challenges of having knee pain during play.

“It’s tough when you don’t have a follow-through,” he said. “I’m basically just trying to stay on one leg. But the adrenaline of playing with my son will get me through. So, I’ll be out for a while. We’ve got Christmas coming up, so we’ll get to spend some time together.”

Daly also related his injury to what Tiger Woods is currently going through.

“It’s no fun when you can’t walk and can’t turn and be able to get out and practice enough and complete, which I can’t do right now really,” Daly said. “I pray for Tiger. I hope his leg holds up and gets fixed because we need him on the Tour. For me, I’ve had probably more surgeries probably than Tiger. They just keep adding up over the last five years. But I get this metal put in this knee, hell, I got more metal than the Bionic Man does.”

As a result of Tiger’s leg injury and inability to effectively walk a championship golf course for 72 holes, the topic of carts being used via exemption has been a subject of discussion this year.

Woods has been adamant for years that he would never use a cart in tournament play and reiterated that fact once again last month.

“My teammate was Casey Martin, and what he did with the ADA, I voted against it. I think [walking] is an integral part of the game at our level, and I will never take a golf cart until it’s sanctioned.”

“It’s sanctioned on the Champions Tour and the PNC is part of that [a PGA Tour Champions sanctioned event],” he says. “As far as a regular event, no, I would never do that.”

Daly, who’s taken a cart via exemption in the past, argued that taking a cart isn’t an advantage, and is actually a disadvantage in competitive golf.

“I’m not embarrassed to take a cart. It’s not helping my golf game by any means,” Daly said. “I would rather walk and play golf because then you have time to settle down on a good hole or a bad hole and you’re walking instead of just getting in the cart and going up and hitting the shot. It’s actually a big disadvantage. But if I could walk, I’d definitely do it.”

In 2019, Tiger was critical of Daly taking a cart for the PGA Championship.

“As far as JD taking a cart, well, I walked with a broken leg. So …”

For what it’s worth, Daly has been on the record many times since Tiger’s comment saying there were no hard feelings after Woods’ criticism.
