Rumor: World top 10 golfer will be leaving PGA Tour for LIV Golf

Another week, another huge rumour is brewing that a current top 10 player in the Official World Golf Rankings is set to leave the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf.

The popular ‘Secret Tour Pro’ account on Twitter understands that one of the best players in the world is about to head over to the Saudi-funded LIV Golf Invitational Series.

“The STP has been contacted by several well informed and trusted sources, who have said that a current OWGR Top-10 player will make the jump to LIV in the coming weeks,” reads the Secret Tour Pro tweet.

“STP knows who it is, but is unable to name this player at this current time. More to follow.”

So taking a closer look at the world’s current top 10, who could it be?

Well, let’s go through the list and whittle it down.

1. Scottie Scheffler – confirmed PGA Tour
2. Jon Rahm – confirmed PGA Tour
3. Rory McIlroy – confirmed PGA Tour
4. Collin Morikawa – confirmed PGA Tour
5. Justin Thomas – confirmed PGA Tour
6. Cameron Smith – been very quiet of late
7. Patrick Cantlay – interesting interview last week, scroll below to watch
8. Viktor Hovland – been linked with LIV Golf
9. Sam Burns – confirmed PGA Tour
10. Matt Fitzpatrick – confirmed PGA Tour

So of the current top 10, we believe there are three nominees for the next LIV Golf position.

Step forward, Cameron Smith, Patrick Cantlay and Viktor Hovland.

We believe it has to be one of them.

Smith, 28, has been particularly quiet of late, and as a fellow Aussie he has no doubt been in talks with LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman in recent weeks.

Then there is reigning FedEx Cup champion Cantlay, 30, who gave a very interesting answer to a question about LIV Golf last week (video below).

And finally Norway’s Hovland, 24, who has been strongly linked with a move away from the PGA Tour to LIV Golf in recent weeks.

Similarly to Smith, he has gone quiet in recent weeks.

You could also argue all three of the above players have not exactly been playing their best golf of late, so perhaps they have money on their mind elsewhere?

The next LIV Golf event after this week is in New Jersey, Bedminster, from July 29 to 31, so we will no doubt learn more about player transfers over the coming weeks.

Whichever player in the world’s top 10 does make the move to LIV Golf, they will become the top-ranked player on the circuit.

Former World No.1 Dustin Johnson is currently the best ranked player on LIV Golf at 17th in the OWGR.

But with no OWGR points currently counting on LIV Golf, everyone on Norman’s Tour will be losing spot rapidly – at least until new regulations come into play, if they do at all.
