Golf writer John Huggan tweeted Seve Ballesteros would have done a “better job controlling spin than anyone in The Players Championship field this week”. PGA Tour pro Lee Westwood did not take kindly to the comment.

Sky Sports Golf commentator and former European Tour winner Tony Johnstone was also in agreement with Huggan’s tweet.

The debate then rumbled on as you can see below. Who do you agree with here?

“Am thinking Seve would do a better job controlling spin than anyone in the Players field this week #justsaying”, tweeted Huggan, a contributing editor to Golf Digest and Golf World.

“Or anyone born before 1970,” replied six-time European Tour winner Johnstone. “A club more and hit it softly #notrocketscience”.

Westwood, 38, then got involved: “God you grumpy old men do come out with some [poo emoji] sometimes [face palm, laughter emojis].”

Westwood had a week to forget at TPC Sawgrass as he missed the cut on 9-over par following rounds of 73 and a shocking second-round 80.

He was one of a number of star names to miss the final 36 holes, including Collin Morikawa, Patrick Cantlay and Brooks Koepka.

Westwood, ranked just outside top 50 in the world, has been struggling for form in 2022 with just one top-20 finish in six starts.

The Players Championship has gone into a Monday finish for the first time in the tournament’s history since Fred Funk landed the spoils at TPC Sawgrass in 2005.

It marks the first time a PGA Tour event has finished on a Monday since the Northern Trust back in August last year.

With courses playing 500-700 yds shorter with modern equipment (less when it’s waterlogged, obviously) than 25 years ago should the pins be made easier?🤷‍♂️
