Report shares fresh details on Patrick Cantlay hat controversy “I’ll wear a hat when I’m paid to be here like he is”
The Ryder Cup fallout seemed to be done and dusted, but a new report has thrown fresh light on one of the most significant incidents that surrounded the event in Rome.
During the contest, Sky Sports’ Jamie Weir reported that “the US team room is fractured, a split led predominantly by Patrick Cantlay.” Weir indicated that Cantlay didn’t wear a hat as a protest for not getting paid for the Ryder Cup.
Cantlay dismissed the report, calling it “totally false.”
However, in his latest piece for The Fire Pit Collective, renowned journalist Michael Bamberger has shared new details of what allegedly went down in Rome.
Per Bamberger, when approached by NBC reporter Steve Sands and asked about the absence of a hat, Cantlay responded by saying: “I’ll wear a hat when I’m paid to be here like he is”while motioning in the direction of Julius Mason, a PGA of America PR executive.
The report added:
“Cantlay’s response to Sands was shared with me by three Americans who were at this year’s Ryder Cup in different official capacities. (I was not there.) There were slight variations in the exact wording of Cantlay’s response. In one version, for instance, Mason was cited by name. But there was no material differences in what he was quoted as saying as he walked on to the first tee.”
The Ryder Cup may be over, but ‘HatGate’ is still rumbling on.

Ryder Cup should be discontinued. The atmosphere of fans has Changed from respect for the Players into a hate filled environment of comments, actions, screaming and it is not just Europeans but also Americans. To share that these players should be honored to play for their countries is ridiculous with how the PGA and European tour picks the players and how each team is using course conditions to advantage their team. Sorry but the Olympics have an atmosphere of respect in earning the players spot, how fans support players and the meaning of winning a medal. How this competition has dramatically changed into disgusting behaviors, which sorry the media supports, is how our governments actions have helped create the world hate, woke environment we live in now. And as far as some of the players behaviors have now changed into lack of respect for the week that previous great golf’s would never have behaved. The people and medias reaction to the sportsmanship exhibited by Ricky Fowler gIves a clear example of what our nations have become. End this embarrassment.
Hat Gate is still rumbling on because, like every other controversy, it gets prolonged by the media. Quit talking about it and it goes away.
