SILO Golf Club Carrier Review – Approach. Range. Bagless.

Par 3, you leave it short of the green 10 yards but a solid 50 yards from the cart path.  Yay you!  Tremendous shank.  …You drive your cart up even with the green because as we all know most courses don’t allow carts on the minimal fairway of a par 3.  From 50 yards away you try to guess your next shot sequence – Is it a PW?  Maybe a 56 degree?  Ooooo, but there is sand on the far side of the green and that means we will most definitely be heading to the beach.  Don’t forget your putter because you’re surely not walking all the way back to your cart to grab it and since we’re playing for money you will not be putting with your SW.  So, a handful of clubs in tow and you’re off.

Been there?  …don’t lie.  We all have!  It seems so simple to grab a handful of clubs but could it be easier?  The guys over at Rival and Revel have taken it upon themselves to engineer the SILO – a bagless gadget to carry your clubs comfortably whether for your approach or at the range.   Here’s what we found when using a simple idea manufactured into a simple piece of golf equipment:

Looks/Feel

silo reviewThe SILO is a small and compact little device that you can easily keep in your bag or car for when you’re ready to use.  It’s lightweight (as R&R says on their website – as light as a feather if a feather was 0.4 lbs).  Just handling the product it seems like it could easily do the job of keeping your approach clubs in a neat and tidy little spot and easy to grab and head up the fairway with.  I’ve always been the kind of golfer who also only likes to bring a couple clubs to the range to warm up with so just the thought of the SILO makes sense to me.  I opted to take the SILO out to the executive course since that will give me the most opportunity to grab and walk.  To get the club into the SILO grips you really have to use some muscle.  My guess is over time it will loosen up a bit which will make adding clubs a little more simple.  It is recommended that you insert the club nearest the hosel so possibly I’m not close enough on my initial try.  I tried adding the full six clubs but also a simple three clubs and both worked equally well.  Carrying the clubs is surprisingly comfortable.  I’m used to using both hands to carry my clubs up to the approach shot but this is an easy one handed carry almost like holding a slightly more thick bicycle handle.  Although the SILO only adds an additional half a pound it did seem a little heavy… but again that’s just because I normally do the two hand grab.  The attached magnetic ball marker has their vintage elk head logo on the top and snaps in and out easy as well.  I was fortunate enough to see one of each of the SILO colors and although it states Titanium Gray just know it’s a bit more white.

Performance/Functionality

Executive course, lots of opportunity to only need a few clubs.  I snapped into my SILO my 56 degree, my PW, putter, and SW and actually just slid the whole thing right back into my bag.  First hole off the tee I hit a 9i and landed pin high but off to the right of the green.  Oddly enough I was excited I didn’t hit the green so I could use the SILO.  Once down by the green I grabbed the group of clubs and easily walked up to the ball.  I didn’t end up standing the SILO up as the instructions suggest (but yes it does work!) and opted to use my PW.SILO Review

I snapped the club out, hit, and replaced it back into the SILO.  Easy!  I’d like to say it went in the hole but alas it did not.  I snapped out my putter and finished the hole.  On the next hole I decided to just walk the hole and get a gauge on that aspect of the product.  Off the tee I hit my 56 degree (super short hole) and landed on the green.  I snapped in my club and down the short fairway I went.  The easy of carrying your clubs in one hand was a nice change.  Who knew it could be this easy?  As the round progressed I decided the ultimate need for the SILO is if you simply wanted to walk and not carry your bag.  It’s quick and fairly effortless to snap in your clubs and go.  Putting the SILO in your bag with clubs already snapped into it is a little counterproductive only because if you need just your putter then you have to pull the whole thing out, unsnap and put the rest back in your bag.  I decided to try out the ball marker as well and found that it’s easy to get in and out… but only if you don’t have the max six clubs in the SILO.  If you have all six clubs in then there isn’t much room to slide your fingers in and out of the center.

Overall

My overall recommendation is this – use the SILO for the range, use the SILO if you plan on walking an executive course, use the SILO if you simply don’t like having to awkwardly carry a handful of clubs for your approach shot.  Ultimately this is a handy piece of golf equipment for those moments when you only need a few clubs.  The team at Rival and Revel took a relatively simple idea and engineered a useful golf product that I’m confident golfers everywhere will enjoy.  We should always be grateful for anything that improves life… and in this case, golf!
